Man struck, killed on I-80 in Dixon while retrieving ladder that fell from his truck

A man was struck and killed on Interstate 80 in Dixon on Monday morning while retrieving a ladder that fell off his truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officials said the 59-year-old Dixon man was driving eastbound on Interstate 80 near Highway 113 at 8:10 a.m. Monday when the ladder he was carrying on his truck fell into the roadway.

The man pulled to the right shoulder and reversed the truck back to the ladder, according to the Solano CHP. He exited the truck and walked into the slow lane to retrieve his ladder when he was immediately hit by a Toyota Camry, officials said.

The Dixon Fire Department responded and declared the man dead at the scene, the CHP said. A child who was in the truck at the time of the accident was not hurt, officials said.

The driver of the Camry, a man from Vacaville, did stop at the scene of the crash, officials said. He was uninjured.
