High-speed chase of stolen Prius on Hwy. 99 ends with spike strip, teen’s arrest, police say

A high-speed chase, topping 100 mph and involving a stolen Toyota Prius, swept down Highway 99 early Wednesday, police said.

Sacramento police received a 911 call around 3:30 a.m. from a residence in the 1700 block of Anoka Avenue in Meadowview reporting the theft of a blue 2008 Toyota Prius, said Officer Marcus Basquez, spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department.

The victim reported two men had approached her window while she was parked in the driveway of the home, waiting for someone. She said one man pointed his hand at her, simulating a gun, and ordered her to get out of the car and lie on the ground. It was dark and the victim said she couldn’t see what he was pointing at her. The men also stole her iPhone, Basquez said.

Officers responded and took a report, entering the license plate number in the department’s database.

About an hour later, at 4:40 a.m. a POD – a police observation device equipped with a license plate reader – alerted police that the stolen Prius had passed through the intersection of Center Parkway and Mack Road, Basquez said. PODs are marked boxes containing cameras that hang in some intersections across the city, and provide live footage to police.

Police responded and found the car traveling westbound on Florin Road, Basquez said. A sergeant pulled behind the Prius and it immediately sped away, he said.

The sergeant and three additional officers pursued the stolen car as it sped down residential streets in south Sacramento before getting on southbound Highway 99.

The Prius reached speeds of 104-105 mph during the chase, Basquez said, and the sergeant reported seeing two men in the vehicle, one wearing a red sweater.

Basquez said there was light traffic on the major thoroughfare as the pursuit sped south before dawn.

California Highway Patrol officers drove ahead of the chase as it headed into Elk Grove and deployed spike strips across the highway, Basquez said. The Prius hit the spike strips and stopped on the shoulder of the highway near the exit for Bond Road.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, got out of the car and was arrested. The passenger, Daniel Laquin Jones, 21, was also arrested on suspicion of carjacking and parole violation.
