15-year-old cyclist critically injured in collision while crossing street in Carmichael
A 15-year-old boy suffered major injuries while riding his bicycle Saturday evening after he was hit by a car that ran a red light, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The boy was riding his bike eastbound across Fair Oaks Boulevard near Palm Drive in Carmichael at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday. He was in a marked crosswalk on a green light, according to a news release from the CHP.
A Volkswagen Jetta traveling northbound ran a red light and hit the boy, causing him to be thrown from his bicycle and into the windshield of the Volkswagen.
He suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition Monday, according to the CHP.
He was not wearing a bicycle helmet or visible/reflective safety clothing, the release said.
The driver of the Volkswagen remained on scene and cooperated with police. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision and no arrests were made.
