El Dorado County standoff over Somerset shooting ends after several hours

Sacramento Bee file

Deputies with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office were engaged in an hours-long standoff in Somerset after a woman was shot Thursday morning.

Law enforcement surrounded a house on Meyers Lane where Ulrich Smith, the man accused of shooting the woman, had refused to come out, according to the sheriff’s office.

As of 7 p.m., the house was secure and “no subjects are outstanding,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. No further information was available.

The shooting was reported by the victim’s mother, who called deputies from a neighbor’s house to tell them Smith shot her daughter, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nearby Pioneer Elementary School was temporarily locked down as a precaution, according to the sheriff’s office.

A previous version of this article said the victim had been killed, but the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has yet to confirm her status.
