Highway 50 reopened, man in custody after police pursuit forced lane closures in both directions
A man is in custody Sunday after a police pursuit forced the closure of both directions of Highway 50 near La Riviera for more than two hours.
Westbound traffic was held at Bradshaw Road and eastbound traffic was held at Watt Avenue just after 2 p.m. as police attempted to make contact with the suspect.
Roughly a dozen law enforcement vehicles and a SWAT team vehicle were seen from the Watt Avenue overpass at 4:20 p.m., while a red Ford Mustang was parked in front of them.
Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Vance Chandler said officers received a call at 1:20 p.m. and became involved in a vehicle pursuit.
The highway closure was expanded from Watt Avenue to Howe Avenue at 4:11 p.m., Caltrans announced in a tweet.
As of 5:15 p.m., the highway had been reopened, Caltrans said.
This is the second major highway closure within the city limits this month: The California Highway Patrol closed both directions of Highway 99 on May 2 when a man threatened to jump off an overpass. The highway was reopened early the next day after the man surrendered.
