Pigs, cattle have reason to cross road: Livestock truck catches fire on I-80 near Auburn
Why did the pigs — and cattle — cross the road? Because the truck hauling them was on fire.
Traffic was blocked near Auburn on Sunday evening after a livestock truck caught fire on westbound Interstate 80, losing about 200 pigs and cattle in the road.
The truck caught fire near Ophir Road, and several lanes of traffic were blocked, according to Caltrans.
California Highway Patrol logs recorded the incident starting at 6:44 p.m., when the semi trailer was reported burning on the right shoulder.
The engine was on fire, according to CHP logs, and the animals from the truck’s trailer were running amok on the roadway. The doors of the trailer had been opened to save the pigs, the logs said.
As of 7:25 p.m., CHP officers were requesting tow trucks to remove the vehicle.
