An 89-year-old Nevada City woman died Thursday afternoon when the vehicle she was driving struck a utility pole, then hit a tree.
The crash occurred about 2:40 p.m. as the woman was driving a 2009 Chrysler sedan northbound on Bitney Springs Road, just north of the intersection with Newtown Road. For some reason, she allowed her vehicle to head off the roadway directly into a utility pole, breaking the pole, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. The vehicle then continue forward, striking a large tree head-on before coming to rest.
After the crash, unknown parties extricated the driver and placed her on the ground next to the vehicle, but the parties left the scene before emergency personnel arrived, according to the CHP. A sheriff’s deputy arrived and found the woman lying on the ground next to the vehicle, alone. The deputy began emergency medical treatment and CPR, which was continued by arriving medical personnel. But efforts to revive the woman were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman’s name has not been released pending notification of family. CHP officials said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors in the crash, but a toxicology test will be performed as part of an autopsy in conjunction with the coroner’s investigation.
