A Roseville man died Tuesday after the motorcycle he was riding struck a deer near Rollins Lake in Nevada County.
The collision occurred about 9:45 a.m. as Arthur W. Brogan, 70, was riding a 2005 Honda FX motorcycle eastbound on the Greenhorn Access Road, just west of the intersection with Rollins View Drive, traveling 25 to 30 mph. A witness following Brogan reported that as Brogan neared Rollins View Drive, a female deer jumped into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the motorcycle at a distance of less than 50 feet, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
Brogan was unable to avoid a collision and struck the right-rear quarter of the deer. The motorcycle overturned and ejected Brogan, who was wearing a helmet, onto the asphalt roadway.
Emergency personnel responded and prepared to take Brogan to a regional trauma center via air ambulance. But Brogan’s condition became critical as they departed and he was flown instead to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, where efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The CHP reported that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been a factor in the collision.
Greenhorn Access Road was partially blocked for about 90 minutes while the crash scene was investigated and the motorcycle removed.
