One person was arrested and two cars were impounded Friday night after police in South Sacramento cracked down on a sideshow near Jackson Road, leading to a car chase, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers first got a call around 10:05 p.m. about a possible illegal street race near Elk Grove Florin and Florin roads, according to the release. As many as 100 vehicles were observed driving recklessly, the CHP said in a social media post.

The cars then moved to Eagles Nest Road and Highway 16, blocking the intersection as multiple cars performed donuts in the street. Officers then responded and ordered the gathering to disperse. One driver doing doughnuts in a Mazda Miata stopped when confronted by officers. The driver, only identified as a man, was cited and the Miata was impounded for 30 days.

The driver of a Ford Mustang, however, fled the scene and led officers on a brief chase. The chase was called off as officers deemed it to be unsafe to other drivers, with the Mustang reaching speeds of 115 mph in traffic.

Helicopter crews followed the Mustang to a home in the Arden Arcade area where one of the passengers fled the car and hid in a neighboring backyard. Officers responded to the residence and took the driver and two passengers into custody.

The driver, whose name was not released, was arrested and charged with felony evasion and the Mustang was impounded for 30 days.
