Sacramento deputy fires gun at suspect in Orangevale. One person in custody after fight
A Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy fired their gun at a man carrying a gun “in a threatening manner” but didn’t hit him during an encounter Sunday evening at a home in Orangevale, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Monday
The incident brought a heavy law enforcement presence to the 6800 block of Woodmore Oaks, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet about 8:40 p.m.
The sheriff’s office dispatch center received a call from the home at 7:15 p.m. The caller, a juvenile, told dispatchers “her mother’s boyfriend was high on drugs and running in and out of the home,” according to the release.
Deputies arrived 35 minutes later and found the man with a handgun in his hands and one deputy fired a single shot at him, missing him.
“Fearing the suspect would shoot deputy or partner, deputy fired at suspect,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a second tweet, with the initial tweet indicating that no one had been hit by gunfire. “Suspect firearm recovered at scene.”
“The suspect subsequently dropped the firearm,” the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies approached the man, identified as John Thomas Reynolds, 36, and tried to detain him. Reynolds and the deputies engaged in a physical altercation, and one deputy sustained minor injuries to a limb, said Sgt. Tess Deterding, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released.
Reynolds was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail and booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a large capacity magazine and resisting arrest, according to jail records.
He is being held in lieu of $85,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
The deputy involved in the shooting is a 2-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, according to the release.
