Fire at junk car yard in West Sacramento – smoke visible in downtown
Firefighters in West Sacramento have a fire that could be seen from downtown Sacramento and Davis “under control” Friday evening but it could take several hours to mop up the blaze, officials said.
The fire at a car towing yard on the 700 block of Houston Street started at 3:29 p.m. and burned about 50 cars, according to West Sacramento spokesman Paul Hosley. He said while the call was only a single alarm, a number of the department’s fire personnel were able to quickly reach the blaze and “put it under control.”
“A lot of resources went out (to the scene) immediately, and they got it,” he said.
The fire on Houston Street is in the industrial Michigan-Slide neighborhood, about a half-mile south of the Riverpoint Marketplace shopping complex, which includes an Ikea and a Walmart, and between Harbor Boulevard and the interchange of Interstate 80 and the Capital City Freeway.
Hosley said no one was injured in the blaze, which is under investigation.
