Sacramento motorcyclist killed in crash may have run red light at 70 mph, CHP says
A motorcyclist was killed in a high-speed collision Sunday afternoon in Arden Arcade, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 48-year-old Sacramento man riding a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle at about 70 mph on southbound Watt Avenue failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Kentfield Drive, broadsiding a Hyundai Elantra traveling eastbound, the CHP North Sacramento office said in a news release, based on witness statements.
The rider suffered major injuries in the crash and was transported by Sacramento Metro Fire District personnel to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release.
The Hyundai driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and did not display any signs of intoxication, CHP officials said. No arrests were made.
The CHP says it will use county traffic camera footage to assist in the case.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role. Anyone who witnessed the collision or can provide information is asked to call the CHP North Sacramento office at 916-348-2300 or Officer AJ McTaggart at 916-798-0975.
Two lanes of southbound Watt Avenue were closed for about two hours Sunday as authorities investigated the scene.
Identification of the victim will be released by the coroner’s office pending notification of family.
