Infant killed after San Joaquin County deputy crashes patrol car on I-5, CHP says
An infant died Saturday after a San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputy rear-ended a vehicle with his patrol car on Interstate 5 in Stockton, according to the California Highway Patrol.
In a news release, the Stockton-area CHP said the deputy was driving northbound on I-5 near Charter Way just after 10:30 p.m. when it struck a Ford sedan for unknown reasons.
The impact pushed the Ford off the highway and down an embankment. The deputy got out of his car and went to the Ford, where he removed an infant from the back and began attempting CPR, CHP said.
Bystanders apparently also responded to the scene of the crash, removed the driver and attempted CPR as well.
Once first responders arrived, the deputy and the driver of the Ford were taken to hospitals. The infant was flown to a children’s hospital, where baby was later declared dead, according to CHP.
Multiple lanes of traffic were closed for seven hours while investigators surveyed the crash site. CHP said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the collision.
CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or has further information, to call 209-938-4800.
