Sacramento police shoot at dog near midtown Safeway. Security guard and suspect hit
An officer-involved shooting sparked by an attacking dog near the Safeway in midtown Sacramento hospitalized two people Wednesday evening.
Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Sabrina Briggs said an officer had been working at a second job at a business in the shopping center when a disturbance arose.
The officer approached the suspect who was causing the disturbance when “an aggressive dog physically charged the officer,” biting his arm, Briggs said.
Additional officers arrived to assist, and one officer fired a bullet toward the dog, Briggs said. The round fractured and shrapnel hit the suspect and a security guard who had been managing the disturbance.
Both the security guard and the suspect were transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer suffered minor wounds from the dog attack, Briggs said.
The dog was not injured and was taken into custody by animal control, according to Briggs.
Jandy Jorgensen was shopping in the Safeway when the dog apparently ran in, covered in blood.
“Very scared, shaking like a leaf, she just ran to the back of the store and hid underneath my legs,” Jorgensen said. “She wasn’t aggressive, she was real sweet.”
Jorgensen said the dog was still wearing tags from the Front Street Animal Shelter, possibly indicating that the dog had been recently adopted.
Briggs said officers would remain on the scene and the shooting is still under investigation.
