Light-rail train kills man lying on tracks

A light-rail train operator tried but could not stop in time to avoid striking and killing a man lying on the tracks Friday morning in Sacramento.

The 9:30 a.m. crash occurred when the train was outbound from Sacramento, along North 12th Street approaching C Street. When the operator saw the man on the tracks, he braked but could not stop in time.

The man died at the scene, said Sacramento Police Lt. Norm Leong, who oversees Regional Transit police services. Police were planning to view train video to learn why the man was on the tracks. His name has not been released.

“When you see tracks, think that a train is coming,” Leong said. “A train cannot stop as quickly as a car or a semi-truck.”
