Orangevale standoff ends after suspect is gassed out, apprehended by Sheriff’s K9
A five-hour standoff in Orangevale ended Tuesday evening after a man suspected of “brutally beating” his mother was taken into custody by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office after barricading himself inside her home.
According to deputies, the incident ended at approximately 5:45 p.m. after the department’s SWAT deputies deployed gas into the home and the suspect was apprehended by a K9 officer. Deputies said that there were no other people injured in the incident.
Deputies had responded to a residence in the 7100 block of Hazel Avenue just after 12:30 p.m. to detain the man, who allegedly assaulted his mother on Christmas, said Sgt. Tess Deterding, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
The assault happened Wednesday night when deputies responded to a 911 call for assistance. When deputies arrived, the man had left the property, Deterding said.
The mother, who was treated and released from a hospital, she called deputies to ask for assistance after returning to her property Deterding said, believing the man had returned to the property and may be armed.
During the standoff, the man was holed up, refusing the deputies’ commands, officials said.
The man, who was not identified, was known to have access to a firearm, deputies said; however, it was not clear whether a weapon was found when he was taken into custody. Deterding said investigators would continue to process the scene Thursday night. “He is suspected of brutally beating his mother,” deputies said in a social media post.
The standoff was a block away from Louis Pasteur Middle School, which was not in session. Surrounding homes were not evacuated, officials said.
