An inmate at Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center in Elk Grove was killed Tuesday in what deputies are investigating as a homicide.

In a news release, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said deputies working in a minimum-security facility at RCCC received reports of an inmate suffering from a medical condition just after 1 p.m. in one of the barracks.

Responding deputies attempted life-saving measures on the unresponsive victim, who was later declared dead by fire personnel.

Deputies discovered that an altercation occurred in the showers of the barracks, where cameras are not permitted, causing the inmate’s injuries.

Nikolas Kallergis of Sacramento, a 29-year-old inmate, was identified as a suspect in the killing and was booked on homicide charges Friday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim’s identity is not being released until his family is notified.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information regarding the killing to call 916-874-5115.
