Man detained after chase suspected of trying to torch West Sac gas station, police say
Police took a man into custody near Lincoln after a high-speed pursuit that started in West Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon.
The end of the pursuit was caught live by a Caltrans traffic cameras shortly after 1 p.m., when a black sedan became boxed in on an overpass of Industrial Avenue at Highway 65. The car was surrounded by eight marked police or California Highway Patrol vehicles and one other unmarked vehicle.
A news release from the West Sacramento Police Department says officers responded to calls of an arsonist at a gas station in the 3100 block of Jefferson Boulevard. A man was reportedly lighting trash cans on fire while saying he intended to blow up the station.
Police say the suspect, Adam Rudi of West Sacramento, fled prior to their arrival. According to the release, officers spotted the vehicle around 12:30 p.m. near West Capital Avenue and Cedar Street, but Rudi fled when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Traffic cameras showed a growing number of patrol cars chasing the sedan as it traveled east on Interstate 80 with a handful of CHP motorcycles following from farther behind.
The sedan exceeded 95 mph at one point during the chase, according to dispatch audio.
The pursuit lasted more than 30 minutes and proceeded east from West Sacramento to U.S. Highway 50, then headed onto the Capital City Freeway and eastbound I-80 before ending up on northbound Highway 65.
Rudi, 39, exited the vehicle after crashing his vehicle with hands raised and was taken into custody without further incident, traffic cameras showed. He was booked into Yolo County Jail, according to the release.
