Reno pair plead guilty to killing 5-year-old, stuffing her in Sacramento storage locker
The Nevada couple charged with murdering a 5-year-old child found dead inside a Sacramento storage unit in 2018 reversed their initial pleas and pleaded guilty Thursday.
Tyler Anderson and Averyauna Enoch, both 25, agreed to plea deals in court for killing Anderson’s daughter, Cali, and stuffing her inside a locker at a U-Haul facility on Glenrose Avenue in North Sacramento, according to Washoe County court records.
Cali was found in May 2018 in a duffel bag in the locker and was believed to have been dead for at least two weeks. Anderson and Enoch had apparently kept the girl’s body in a closet of their Reno home before renting a U-Haul van and driving the remains down to Sacramento, where they convinced a friend to keep the bag in a sealed box in their storage locker.
The friend grew suspicious of the box and opened it to find Cali’s emaciated corpse. Shortly afterward, Anderson and Enoch were arrested.
The two initially told police that they found their daughter unresponsive on May 4 and had unsuccessfully attempted CPR to revive her, but did not call first responders.
Police searched the couple’s Reno home and found a wire animal crate with handcuffs attached to it, but saw no sign of pets.
Following a hearing at the Sacramento County jail, Anderson’s father told reporters that Cali’s death was an accident.
Anderson was extradited from Sacramento back to Reno, where Enoch was in custody.
In March 2019, both Anderson and Enoch denied charges of murder, child abuse and destroying evidence, entering pleas of not guilty in a Washoe County courthouse.
One month later, the two filed for divorce, according to Washoe County court records. Enoch, who was formerly known as Averyauna Anderson, legally changed her name after the divorce was finalized in August.
Court documents obtained by KCRA say that Enoch tortured Cali to death, starving and dehydrating the child because she was not her biological child. Enoch and Anderson are each expected to be given life sentences as part of the plea deal, according to KCRA.
Their sentencing is scheduled for April 21, according to Washoe County court records.
