Wanted in Butte County, CHP arrests pair near Auburn’s historic courthouse
A robbery investigation in Butte County led law enforcement 70 miles south to Placer County as the California Highway Patrol took two people into custody Wednesday after police activity closed several roads near Auburn’s historic Placer Superior Courthouse.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office sent out a report of a black BMW that detectives there were looking for in connection with the robbery that happened last month, said Officer David Martinez of the CHP’s Auburn office.
He said CHP officers three counties away in Auburn spotted the BMW about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Lincoln Way and Auburn Folsom Road, not far from the courthouse. The CHP stopped the vehicle in a nearby parking lot and took the two people into custody without incident.
Out of precaution, Auburn police officers and Placer County Sheriff’s deputies assisted the CHP in setting up a perimeter around the area for about 40 minutes to keep bystanders away from any potential threat, Martinez said.
Butte County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Megan McMann said Wednesday afternoon that sheriff’s detectives were heading to Placer County to question one of the two people taken into custody in Auburn. She said only one person in the car was considered a person of interest; the detectives were not looking for the other person taken into custody. Neither person’s name was released, pending their booking in Placer County Jail.
McMann said the person of interest was wanted for questioning in connection with a robbery that happened in January but declined to provide further details.
