Mendocino County fight ends when one man’s earlobe is bitten off, police say

Officers investigated a fight between two men in Mendocino County over the weekend in which one of them reportedly bit off the earlobe of the other, Fort Bragg police said Monday.

The fight was reported about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the 200 block of East Redwood Avenue in Fort Bragg. Officers arrived and found a 42-year-old Fort Bragg man bleeding from near his left ear.

The officers saw the man’s left earlobe was missing, according to a news release from the Fort Bragg Police Department. The injured man told the officers another man bit his ear off during a fight.

He identified the man who bit his ear; a 38-year-old Fort Bragg resident who left before police arrived.

The officers called for an ambulance. Medics arrived to treat the injured man. The officers found the detached earlobe, packed it in ice and handed it to the medics. The injured man was taken to a local hospital.

Police sent out an alert to neighboring law enforcement agencies, asking them to be on the lookout for the identified suspect. He later contacted Fort Bragg police to give investigators a statement about the fight. Officials said the man was cooperating with the investigation, which will be sent to the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Officials did not release the names of the two men involved in the fight. No arrests were reported. It was unclear why the men were fighting.

Investigators asked anyone with information about this fight to call Officer Welter at 707-961-2800 ext. 168 or send an email to awelter@fortbragg.com. To provide a confidential tip, call the Crime Tip Hotline at 707-961-3049.
