Lucy, an emotional support labradoodle, was recently reunited with her Placer County family after being tracked to Lake of the Pines. Deputies arrested 33-year-old Karla Guthrie in connection with the theft.

Sheriff’s deputies have reunited a Placer County family with their beloved emotional support dog, a black labradoodle named Lucy, after she was reportedly stolen last month and taken to Nevada County.

Lucy’s owners reported her stolen Jan. 16 and told deputies they believed a woman named Karla Guthrie took her, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday in a Facebook post.

Deputies found evidence linking Guthrie to the theft and arrested her Jan. 24, the post said. Guthrie was released from jail after her initial court hearing.

Detectives and neighbors helped trace Lucy’s whereabouts to a home in the Nevada County town of Lake of the Pines, “a home where Guthrie was known to frequent,” the Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities found Guthrie with Lucy. Guthrie was also in possession of “thousands of dollars in stolen property from an elderly resident in the neighborhood,” the post said.

Guthrie was arrested a second time, on Jan. 28, for violating the terms of her earlier bond release, but was released on bail again, the Sheriff’s Office said.

While out on bail a second time, Guthrie was arrested last Friday on suspicion of receiving stolen property, her third arrest by Northern California authorities in two weeks, according to the social media post.

Guthrie, 33, is back in custody at the Placer County jail on the most recent charge, with her bail set at $3,500. She faces hearings Feb. 18 and March 2 for the stolen property charge and for grand theft dog, both misdemeanors, according to jail and court records.

The Sheriff’s Office posted photos of an enthusiastic Lucy being recently returned to her owners.
