Man accused of posing as FBI agent, asking for North Highlands hotel’s guest roster

A man was arrested Tuesday for posing as an FBI agent and asking staff at a North Highlands hotel for a list of all of its guests, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect allegedly walked in to the Red Roof Inn & Suites at Watt Avenue and Longview Drive around 3 a.m., “identified himself as an FBI agent and requested the hotel roster” from a front desk employee, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Tess Deterding said.

When a hotel employee asked him to show his badge, the man left without the list, Deterding said.

That employee took down the man’s license plate number, and patrolling sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle and suspect several hours later in the 3500 block of Edison Avenue, about a half-mile south of the Red Roof Inn. The suspect was detained around noon without further incident, according to Deterding.

The suspect, identified by Deterding as 27-year-old Daniel Arushanov, was booked into the Sacramento County jail on one charge of impersonating a peace officer, she said.

Arushanov was released from jail Wednesday morning, booking records show.

Impersonating a peace officer is a misdemeanor in California that can carry up to one year in jail and a fine of $2,000, or probation in lieu of jail time.
