Armed suspect detained in Arden Arcade after firing gun in air, standoff with SWAT

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office SWAT officers were in a standoff with an armed suspect for less than an hour Friday morning, ending with the suspect being detained without incident, authorities said.

A person fired a gun outside into the air before going back inside a residence in the 2300 block of Church Avenue and refusing officers’ orders to exit the home, the Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet just after 8 a.m. In an update at 8:20 a.m., authorities tweeted that the incident had “reached a peaceful resolution,” and that police presence would soon clear from the area.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Tess Deterding said authorities were dispatched to the apartment just before 4:45 a.m. for the gunfire, and that SWAT teams took over the scene about three hours later at 7:45 a.m.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.

A school across the street from the scene, Dyer Kelly Elementary, was on a brief lockdown for about 10 minutes, said Raj Rai, a spokeswoman for the San Juan Unified School District. The lockdown affected only staff between 7:15 a.m. and 7:25 a.m., before school started, and there was no threat to the school, she said.

No other details were immediately available.
