The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office on Monday afternoon was telling residents to stay away from an area in Antelope, where it appears a man has shot himself in front of deputies.

The reported shooting occurred in the area of Walerga and Elverta roads, not far from a shopping center.

Sheriff’s officials announced on Twitter about 3:45 p.m. that deputies to speak with a man holding a gun. He then appeared to shoot himself, according to officials.

The man has died, sheriff’s officials announced shortly before 5 p.m. Monday. They said he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a deputy fired one bullet at him during the confrontation.

It was unclear to sheriff’s officials whether the shot fired by the deputy struck the man. Detectives are at the scene investigating the shooting.
