Update: Suspect dies after shooting self during pursuit, Sacramento police say

Police say a suspect who was hospitalized in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a pursuit in Sacramento died Tuesday morning.

Sacramento Police Department spokesman Officer Karl Chan said officers responded to a residence in the Natomas area to reports of a subject who was having a mental health crisis and was in possession of a firearm.

Officers located the person’s vehicle near Del Paso Road and Interstate 5 and attempted to make contact, but the person fled, Chan said.

Police pursued the vehicle until it became disabled in the area of Marina View Drive and Broadway, near Miller Park along the Sacramento River, when the suspect fled on foot.

Chan says officers tried to negotiate with the suspect for about 30 to 40 minutes, and then a gunshot was fired by the suspect. Officers then contacted the suspect and discovered a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect was rushed to the hospital in critical condition as of about 4:45 a.m., according to Chan and a Police Department tweet. Chan said the suspect succumbed to injuries at the hospital a couple of hours later.

No officers were injured or discharged their weapons in the incident, Chan confirmed.

Identification of the deceased will be handled by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
