Man arrested in deadly Carmichael knife attacks arraigned in Sacramento courtroom
The man accused of killing two and wounding two others in a knife rampage at a Carmichael treatment center was arraigned Thursday in Sacramento Superior Court
Martin Raymond Lackey-Garcia stood handcuffed in the center of the courtroom holding cell, his back to the gallery as Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White read the charges: two counts of murder for the deaths of Paul McIntyre and Eileen Stanwick; along with two counts of attempted murder at the Wellness and Recovery Center in the 3600 block of Mission Avenue in Carmichael.
Sacramento County Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Rod Norgaard also brought a special circumstance alleging multiple murders in the deadly Feb. 28 attacks. Lackey-Garcia, through new defense attorney Shelby Alberts, entered not guilty pleas to the charges and will return March 19 to White’s courtroom at Sacramento County Main Jail.
In the gallery, the family and friends of McIntyre and Stanwick received their first glimpse of Lackey-Garcia. Many of the same faces crowded the courtroom Tuesday for what was supposed to be Lackey-Garcia’s first appearance, but a psychiatric examination postponed the hearing until Thursday afternoon.
Lackey-Garcia, 39, remains held in Sacramento County custody without bail.
He was arrested Feb. 28 at the Carmichael treatment center. Authorities said 20 to 30 people were in the center, which offers psychiatric and rehabilitative services, when the attacks began.
Sheriff’s officials said investigators believe Lackey-Garcia knew his victims, but do not know how he was tied to the center or what led to the fatal outburst.
