33 vehicles involved in nine crashes on Highway 50 amid rainy conditions, CHP says

Multiple crashes involving 33 drivers on a two-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 50 fouled traffic Saturday afternoon in what the California Highway Patrol is deeming an “unusual incident.”

In a news release, the south Sacramento-area CHP said nine different traffic accidents occurred around 4:45 p.m. on westbound Highway 50 between Watt Avenue and Howe Avenue in the College/Glen neighborhood.

CHP officers responded to the scene and determined that all nine collisions occurred during rainy conditions, and drivers were either driving too fast or following too close behind other cars.

“When it rains, PLEASE slow down and increase your following distance,” South Sacramento CHP said in its news release.

Despite the multitude of crashes, only minor injuries were reported.
