Update: Machete recovered, but man biking through Davis with it still sought, police say

Police are looking for a man wielding a machete while riding a bicycle in South Davis, and a nearby elementary school is sheltering in place.

The UC Davis Police Department in an update shortly after 1 p.m. said police have recovered the machete, but that the subject “is still outstanding.” Authorities believe there was no threat to the campus as of that time, the campus police department said. Police did not specify where the weapon was found.

Officers continue to seek “a male subject wearing a white t shirt and blue jeans riding a BMX bicycle carrying a machete on Halsey Circle,” the Davis Police Department wrote in a message sent via its Everbridge alert system at 11:20 a.m. Monday. The suspect was further described later as being in his mid-30s with a shaved head and mustache.

In an update just after noon, city police said the suspect is still sought and was last seen near the UC Davis campus.

Campus police in a separate alert sent around 12:15 p.m. said the man was last seen near the Activities and Recreation Center and the Segundo Common dining hall.

Montgomery Elementary School had sheltered in place as a precaution in the morning, police said, but all lockdowns have since been lifted, according to an updated alert message.

Anyone who sees the suspect is urged to call 911.
