10-year-old flown to UC Davis Medical Center after accidental shooting, deputies say

A 10-year-old boy was transported to UC Davis Medical Center after being struck by a bullet on Tuesday, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say they responded to calls of a shooting in the 2300 block of Messina Avenue in Palermo, where they discovered a 10-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the hip. The boy was listed in stable condition after being flown to UC Davis Medical Center, according to a news release.

Deputies say the 10-year-old and his 7-year-old brother had been inside a home on Messina Avenue, when the 7-year-old accidentally discharged the weapon.

Interviews are being conducted with family members, as authorities investigate who owned the firearm and why it was accessible to children, according to the release.
