SWAT responds to ‘erratic’ man with gun in hospital. Suspect in custody, police say

A SWAT team, crisis negotiators and other officers responded early Wednesday morning to Mercy Hospital of Folsom, where police say a man wearing a holstered gun began acting erratically, destroying property.

The situation resolved peacefully, with the man surrendering and being taken into custody around 3:20 a.m., Folsom Police Department spokeswoman Det. Melanie Catanio said.

The incident was first reported shortly after 2 a.m., when police responded to reports of a man who entered the hospital on Creekside Drive saying he required medical attention, Catanio said.

The man had a gun in a holster and was “refusing to take it off,” Catanio said.

“His behavior became erratic to the point he was destroying property in the lobby,” Catanio said.

Negotiators eventually worked out a “peaceful surrender” with the suspect, identified by Catanio as 32-year-old Brian Steffes.

Steffes is in the process of being booked into the Sacramento County jail, Catanio said Wednesday morning. His exact charges are still pending, she said.
