Elderly man dead in North Highlands possibly beaten with bat, Sheriff’s Office says

Sheriff’s homicide detectives have arrested a suspect after an elderly man died of a trauma injury, with a 911 caller telling authorities he beat his grandfather to death with a baseball bat Thursday evening in North Highlands.

Deputies responded around 5 p.m. to the 3700 block of Bolivar Avenue following a 911 call from a male who said he “struck his grandfather with a baseball bat and he was dead,” according to a news release by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Arriving deputies found an elderly male inside the home with apparent trauma and attempted life-saving measures as fire personnel responded to the scene, the news release said. The victim was taken to a hospital and later pronounced deceased.

The male caller was contacted by deputies in the roadway near the residence and was detained, according to the news release.

In an update, the Sheriff’s Office said 34-year-old Frank Swanson has been arrested and booked into the Sacramento County jail on charges related to homicide.

The victim was further described as a 78-year-old man, but the Sheriff’s Office did not specify whether there was indeed a familial relationship between the two.

Identity of the victim will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

Anyone who has additional information relating to the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
