A 3-hour standoff in Oak Park ended Tuesday when a carjacking suspect who barricaded himself inside a home surrendered to police, the Sacramento Police Department said.

The standoff stemmed from a carjacking that took place at 7:20 a.m. in the area of 6th Avenue and 33rd Street, said Officer Karl Chan, spokesman for the department.

Officers responded to the area after person who called 911 hung up, according to police radio communications. They located the victim who reported that a man had “brandished a gun and stolen their vehicle,” Chan said.

A police helicopter was called in to aid in the search, and officers found that the suspect had abandoned the vehicle in the 3500 block of San Jose Way and fled into a residence.

“The residence was determined to be a family member of the suspect’s residence,” Chan said in an email. “The residence was evacuated and the suspect barricaded himself inside of the house.”

Crisis negotiators and SWAT personnel communicated with the suspect for more than three hours, police said. The suspect surrendered peacefully.

The man, who was not identified, was detained. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
