Update: 13-year-old boy fatally struck by car while crossing Hazel Avenue is identified

A teenager was killed early Friday morning when he ran into oncoming traffic and was hit by a car in Orangevale, authorities said.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the boy Saturday as Shawn Williams, 13, of Orangevale.

The California Highway Patrol said the collision was reported about 6:15 a.m. at Hazel and Oak avenues. The driver pulled over to call 911 and remained at the scene, telling officers the boy ran in front of his vehicle, the CHP said.

Medics pronounced the boy dead at the scene. It was unclear why he ran across the street in traffic.

Southbound Hazel Avenue was closed near Oak Avenue for a brief time Friday as authorities investigated the fatal collision.
