Update: Rancho Cordova man in custody on DUI charge after passenger killed on Highway 160
A Rancho Cordova man, who the California Highway Patrol says was driving under the influence, is facing manslaughter charges after a crash that killed one of his passengers Saturday morning in Sacramento.
Officers were dispatched at 10:20 a.m. after a vehicle struck a tree on Highway 160 near Canterbury Road. When they arrived, the driver was out of the vehicle, but two other occupants, who were unrestrained when the crash occurred, were trapped in the wreckage, the Highway Patrol stated.
The driver, 34-year-old Mark Grosvenor of Rancho Cordova, and both passengers were taken to a hospital with major injuries, officers said. A female passenger, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead by hospital staff shortly after 1 p.m., according to the CHP.
No further information was provided on the condition of the second passenger, 26-year-old Anthony Jones.
Grosvenor gave officers a brief statement of the events leading up to the crash before he was taken to the hospital, authorities said. Officers determined Grosvenor was driving under the influence and placed him under arrest, but he remained in the care of the hospital’s trauma staff due to the severity of his injuries and COVID-19 protocols, the CHP said.
On Wednesday, Grosvenor was released from the hospital and arrested on suspicion of several counts including felony vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail and awaits arraignment, the CHP said in an update.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or who can provide additional information is asked to contact officers Greg Zumstein or A.J. McTaggart at (916) 348-2300.
