Boy, 10, killed in suspected DUI crash in Sutter County, CHP says. Driver broke spine

A 10-year-old boy was killed and a Colusa man, accused of driving under the influence, broke his spine in a two-car crash Sunday evening on Highway 20 west of Sutter, authorities said.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. when a Ford Fusion heading east on the highway, exceeding the speed limit, lost control and crashed into a concrete wall on the westbound side near South Tarke Road, the California Highway Patrol’s Yuba-Sutter Office said Monday in a news release.

A Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in the westbound lane, driven by a 59-year-old Sacramento man and traveling 50 mph, braked but was unable to avoid a collision with the crashed sedan. The truck hit the right rear end of the Ford, causing major damage to both, the CHP said.

The passenger in the Ford Fusion, an unidentified 10-year-old boy from Colusa, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP news release. The vehicle’s driver, identified as 29-year-old Tony Kesterson of Colusa, suffered “compound fractures to (his) spine.”

Kesterson was arrested and booked Monday into the Sutter County jail on suspicion of DUI, with alcohol suspected as a factor in the crash, and vehicular manslaughter with gross neglect, booking logs show. The Toyota driver, the pickup truck’s only occupant, was not arrested or injured, the CHP reported. All parties were wearing seat belts, the collision report shows.

Identification of the deceased will be handled by the Sutter County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The collision remains under investigation, the CHP Yuba-Sutter Office says.
