One detained after search for shooting suspect in Rancho Cordova, sheriff’s officials say

One man was injured in a shooting Thursday in Rancho Cordova and a person has been detained after a lengthy search, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.

In a news conference, sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Tess Deterding said deputies responded to the 10500 block of Mills Tower Drive shortly after 11 a.m. and found the victim lying in front of an apartment door.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body and was transported to a hospital for treatment, but a condition is unknown.

Authorities began a search that spread across two different locations in Rancho Cordova, including the 10000 block of Coloma Road. At least six units were around an apartment where the suspect is believed holed up had been cleared of residents.

By noon, the apartment building was evacuated and officials used multiple pieces of police equipment to search the building, including a rook, which is a type of armored vehicle.

Deterding later said a “person of interest” had been detained at a second location. She added it is unknown if there are any outstanding suspects.

A woman and two children were also safely removed from the apartment building on Mills Tower Road.

Investigators believe that the person of interest and victim knew each other prior to the shooting, Deterding said.

“Out of an abundance of caution,” evacuations will remain in place for 45 minutes, she said.
