Update: Suspect surrenders after shooting prompted evacuation of North Highlands motel

A North Highlands motel was evacuated Thursday morning following reports of shots fired, with the suspect taken into custody about four hours later, according to Sacramento County Sheriff’s officials.

No injuries have been reported, but deputies responded around 4:30 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the America’s Best Value Inn in the 4600 block of Watt Avenue, just north of Interstate 80, according to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Tess Deterding.

Deterding said that as of 7 a.m., evacuations were in progress at the motel.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., the male suspect exited a room and was taken into custody without further incident.
