Elk Grove woman rescued after fall from Foresthill Bridge, Placer sheriff says

A Elk Grove woman was rescued Wednesday after falling off the Foresthill Bridge, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

“The young woman fell about 20 feet off a girder and was fortunate not to have fallen farther and died,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post. “Risk of death is NOT worth your social media post. STAY OFF THE BRIDGE.”

The sheriff’s office said the woman and her boyfriend had visited the bridge after watching TikTok videos of people trespassing underneath it.

The bridge, also known as the Auburn Bridge, is the tallest in California and a spot well-known for thrill-seekers and suicide attempts. It stands 720 feet tall and spans the north fork of the American River.

Prior to this incident, the sheriff’s office had said in late April there was an uptick in trespassers at the bridge, and had issued 25 citations in the span of two weeks.

The citation carries a potential penalty of a $2,000 fine or six months in jail, depending on the circumstances and prior criminal history.
