Grass fire near Sacramento airport burns about 100 acres, Fire Department says
The Sacramento Fire Department battled and extinguished a large grass fire northeast of the Sacramento International Airport on Saturday night.
Department spokesman Capt. Keith Wade said the fire ignited just after 9 p.m. among rows of mowed-down straw in an open field near the intersection of West Elverta Road and Metro Air Parkway.
Firefighters were hindered by the natural landscape, Wade said, as a single access road made it difficult to transport equipment and crews out to the fire.
An abundance of drainage ditches out in the field posed an obstacle to rigs as well, which could easily get stuck.
“It was kind of a challenge,” he said.
There were natural breaks in the vegetation that halted the progress of the blaze, Wade said.
Despite a mild breeze that helped to fuel the fire, crews were able to put it out before midnight.
A battalion chief directing crews estimated that the fire was somewhere around 100 acres.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was undetermined.
