Suspected drunk driver rescued after crash into manure pond near Elk Grove, CHP says
Authorities rescued a suspected drunk driver early Monday after he reportedly crashed his vehicle into a liquid manure storage pond at a dairy farm near Elk Grove, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash was first reported about 1:30 a.m., when CHP dispatchers received a call from the driver. He told dispatchers that he crashed his vehicle into an unknown water source, the the South Sacramento CHP Office announced in a Facebook post.
The driver told dispatchers that the vehicle was quickly filling up with the liquid at the dairy farm on Franklin Boulevard near Elk Grove.
Authorities searched for the driver and his vehicle for about 50 minutes before the Cosumnes Fire Department found the crash site. The driver was inside his vehicle partially submerged in the liquid manure storage pond, according to the CHP.
Fire officials reported about 2:30 a.m. that they rescued the trapped driver and there were no injuries reported.
CHP officers at the scene learned the driver had been in the manure pond for about hour trying to get out of his vehicle before he gave up and called 911 for help. The CHP said the officers spotted signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication as the driver spoke with them.
A subsequent investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The CHP said the man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after spending nearly two hours “neck deep” in the manure pond. The CHP on Monday had not release the driver’s name.
