The sharp memory of a deputy from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office led to a triple arrest last week.

The arrests followed two May 23 reports of theft in Auburn: the first, a stolen mail package containing a laptop from the porch of a private residence and the second, an incident of bike theft in the parking lot of Raley’s Supermarket on Lincoln Way. Both appear to show the same perpetrator.

Reviewing surveillance footage of both crimes, a deputy identified the getaway vehicle in surveillance footage from a past encounter, leading officers to the registered address of the vehicle’s owner in Foresthill.

There, Placer County sheriff’s deputies encountered 28-year-old Alexander Childs, a parolee-at-large who deputies say initially identified himself under a false name. Sheriff’s officials eventually identified him as the man they believe stole both the package and bike, then detained him.

Deputies also booked Ashley Rosa and Jacob Jaregui, owners of the identified getaway vehicle and the property where Childs was found.

All three suspects were arrested and face charges of receiving stolen property, conspiracy, auto theft and petty theft.

Childs was also charged with providing false identification to a peace officer, making and passing counterfeit bills and violation of parole.
