Placerville police arrested a man on suspicion of making criminal threats Tuesday after he commented on one of the department’s Facebook posts, authorities said.

The Placerville Police Department said in a release on social media Edward Ebacher, 63, made comments in response to a post regarding a meeting between the police chief and El Dorado Progressives, a nonprofit organization that advocates for economic and social justice. Placerville police met with the organization amid nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd, who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer.

Authorities said Ebacher’s comments constituted threats against two leaders of the progressive organization. Ebacher’s comments had been removed Wednesday afternoon.

Police said a warrant was issued and Ebacher was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats. Ebacher was booked at the El Dorado County Jail and released on $50,000 bail, according to jail records.

In a Facebook post announcing Ebacher’s arrest, Placerville police said: “This type of criminal behavior will not be tolerated and we will continue to provide a safe environment for those wishing to engage in their constitutionally protected rights.”

The post generated dozens of responses from Facebook users, many of whom applauded the arrest.

“Those comments were beyond disturbing!” said Kendra Stone. “Thank you for standing up for all!”

Others mocked the decision to arrest Ebacher.

“Show him who is boss,” said Damon Land. “Crush dissent. Kidnap him, cage him and take his money. Any resistance against the state should be met with state violence. #CommunistsWithBadges”
