Pedestrian falls under Regional Transit light rail train in downtown Sacramento

A light rail train traveling south Friday on 12th Street in downtown Sacramento hit a pedestrian who had been walking in the roadway.

Devra Selenis, a spokeswoman for Sacramento Regional Transit, said that two people were walking along the tracks near the intersection of D Street when the train approached them.

The pedestrians, whom Selenis said were believed to have been intoxicated, moved off the tracks after the train used its horns to get their attention.

The train continued on its way, but one of the pedestrians lost their balance and rolled under the second train car, according to Selenis. Fire personnel were called at 7 p.m.

Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Capt. Dave Lauchner said that the victim was critically injured and trapped underneath the car, but rescue crews managed to lift the train off of him by 9:30 p.m. in order to take him to a hospital. The pedestrian is expected to recover from their injuries, Selenis said.

RT put a bus bridge in place on the Blue Line in response to the crash, which was lifted around 9:45 p.m.
