A 38-year-old Sacramento man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday after fleeing from a vehicle pursuit, police said.

Matthew Core was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service, who notified the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office that he might be in the area, according to Lt. Shannon Laney of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. Core failed to appear in court after he was released early from federal custody due to coronavirus concerns. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

South Lake Tahoe police found Core in a vehicle with a passenger, 20-year-old Acayda Babson, and attempted a traffic stop, according to Laney. However, when the officer exited his vehicle to approach Core’s car, he sped away.

A pursuit followed, but officers lost the vehicle, police said.

After establishing a perimeter, the vehicle was found abandoned at an apartment complex at 15th Street and Emerald Bay Road. Core and Babson were found in a common area of the apartment complex hiding under equipment and trash, Laney said. They were taken into custody.

After searching Core’s vehicle, police said officers found a SKS assault rifle.

Core was sent to a hospital for treatment of wounds suffered from a police canine during the arrest. After leaving the hospital, he was taken to El Dorado County Jail and charged for his felony federal arrest warrant, a felony warrant out of Placer County for larceny, felony evading and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Core is being held on $415,000 bail.

Babson was booked on misdemeanor obstruction charges.
