Plumas County boy’s drowning in Lake Almanor prompts criminal investigation

A criminal investigation is being conducted into the drowning death of a 15-year-old Plumas County boy Saturday at Lake Almanor.

His identity has not been released pending notification of relatives.

Plumas County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched near Big Cove Resort at 9:20 p.m. Saturday to investigate the report of a drowning. There, they learned the boy had been swimming, went underwater and did not resurface.

Sheriff Greg Hagwood said the boy was with friends at the lake the day after the school year ended.

“There had been some drinking,” Hagwood said. “He went swimming with the group and drowned.”

The body was recovered by divers about 3 a.m. Sunday.

“We have a criminal investigation that was immediately undertaken when it became apparent that there had been some underage drinking,” Hagwood said. “We are making significant progress in that and will be forwarding our investigation results to the District Attorney’s Office for review and possible charging.”
