Man shot by police at apartments near Sacramento State has died, authorities said
Update: More details of Sacramento police shooting emerge; man who was killed had troubled past
Original story:
A man who was shot by Sacramento police outside of an apartment complex near Sacramento State has died at a local hospital, police said.
The man was shot at least once Tuesday afternoon after pointing a handgun at officers, according to Sgt. Sabrina Briggs, Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman. A woman accompanying the man was not injured, nor were officers at the scene.
After shooting the man, officers said they rendered aid until fire personnel arrived on the scene. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to a police news release. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release his identity once his family has been notified.
Officials said they arrived at The Crossings apartments in the 2900 block of Ramona Avenue around 2:15 p.m. to investigate a shooting that occurred near the complex last week. Police said the man matched the description of a person suspected in that shooting due to a “distinctive visible tattoo.” When police attempted to contact him Tuesday, he pulled a handgun from a bag and pointed it at officers, according to the release.
The loaded firearm was recovered after the man was shot, police said.
The apartments are off-campus housing marketed to students at Sacramento State, which is about three-tenths of a mile away.
There were at least 10 police cars in the area Tuesday afternoon, according to a Sacramento Bee reporter at the scene. Ramona Avenue was blocked off by police tape, and people living in the complex — except for those living in Buildings 2 and 3 — were not being allowed into their apartments, residents said.
