Man tried to meet girl for sex at Roseville hotel in undercover sting, police say

A 53-year-old man unknowingly sent sexually explicit social media messages to undercover detectives posing as a girl for nearly a year before he went to a Roseville hotel to have sex with the minor, police said.

Joseph Vossen was arrested July 8 after he arrived at the hotel to meet the girl, the Roseville Police Department announced on its Facebook page Wednesday.

Vossen faces four felonies, including meeting with someone believed to be a minor with the intent of committing lewd or lascivious behavior and contacting someone believed to be a minor for sexual purposes, according to Placer County Jail records.

Detectives from the Roseville Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit arrested Vossen, who intended “to meet an underage female for sexual purposes,” police said.

The social media conversations between Vossen and the undercover detectives went on for about 11 months, according to police. Officials said the conversations were “very explicit” and Vossen sent “an inappropriate photograph.”

Vossen agreed to meet at a hotel along Harding Boulevard. Detectives confronted Vossen when he arrived at the hotel and tried to leave, according to police. Officials said detectives found evidence that showed Vossen’s intentions for the meeting with the girl was for “a sexual encounter.”

On Wednesday evening, Vossen remained in custody at the jail and is scheduled to return to court Aug. 19.
