The Sacramento Police Department is investigating a fatal hit and run that happened near the train station downtown on Thursday.

A man was struck just after noon while walking in the intersection at 4th and I streets just feet from the Sacramento Valley Station, police said in a statement. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene before the officers arrived.

Police said the victim suffered major injuries and died at a hospital.

On Friday, the agency released surveillance photo of the truck seen in the incident. Investigators believe it to be a black or grey 1998 to 2004 GMC Sonoma pickup with moderate damage to the to the front passenger side bumper and hood. The photos provided were taken prior to the collision, police said.

Those with information about the truck and its driver should call police at 916-264-5471.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name after next of kin are notified, police said.
