Police arrest 2 after another night of Jacob Blake marches in downtown Sacramento
Two people were arrested and another was detained during another night of protests in downtown Sacramento on Saturday following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The Sacramento Police Department confirmed around 11 p.m. that one person was arrested for pointing a laser into the eyes of an officer. Demonstrators for the past few days have often brought along green laser pointers, intentionally directing them toward officers or at law enforcement aircraft.
Another person was arrested for resisting officers. Between the two people, police said they were in possession of a smoke bomb, a bottle of urine and two gas masks.
Livestreams from the protest showed two men and a woman cable-tied by officers. Sacramento Police Department spokesman Officer Karl Chan said the three were together, but the third, one of the men, was temporarily detained but not arrested. The other two were seen being placed into police SUVs.
Overall, there were no “widespread reports” of property damage and no injuries were suffered, according to Chan. Graffiti was seen in the wake of the march through downtown, some parking meters were smashed and one bank reported broken windows, but Chan said there was no looting and no government buildings were targeted.
As has become commonplace among Sacramento demonstrations, Saturday’s march began at Cesar E. Chavez Plaza. As during Friday’s march, downtown saw a heavy police presence. Video from the protest showed rows of officers blocking off streets in order to corral the march into looping a smaller area than usual.
Around 10:15 p.m., the crowd returned to Chavez Plaza, where organizers began breaking up the demonstration.
